Elsie Hughes
Racing cyclist | Para & able-bodied competition | Yorkshire, UK
Elsie Hughes is a racing cyclist from Ripponden in West Yorkshire. Born without her left forearm, Elsie competes — and succeeds — against able-bodied riders across multiple cycling disciplines, while also progressing into elite para cycling. She was born in January 2011.
Elsie races Track, Mountain Bike, Cyclo-Cross and Road/Circuit events, combining technical skill, determination and a love of racing that goes well beyond her years.
Elsie is currently working with the Great Britain Cycling Team Para Programme, receiving coaching support with the long-term aim of competing at international para cycling events.
A young rider with big ambitions
Elsie’s cycling journey began almost as soon as she could walk. Encouraged by her family to treat her limb difference as just another problem to solve, she learned early on how to adapt — on and off the bike.
That mindset now defines her racing. Whether it’s battling older riders on the track, racing full adult courses off-road, or adapting equipment to meet new challenges, Elsie approaches every step with focus, creativity and resilience.
Turning 14 marked a major milestone, allowing Elsie to compete in National Para Cycling events for the first time. In her debut season, she has already:
- Competed at National Track Championships
- Finished on the podium in mixed-classification para events
- Been invited onto the British Cycling Para pathway
- Begun preparing for future international competition
Racing across disciplines
Elsie races year-round across multiple formats, developing a broad skill set and strong race intelligence:
- Track cycling – time trial, pursuit and team sprint
- Mountain biking – technical courses in off-road settings
- Cyclo-Cross – fast, tactical racing in demanding winter conditions
- Road & circuit racing – speed, positioning and endurance
This multi-discipline approach is building a strong foundation for long-term success in both para and open competition.
Innovation, support and teamwork
Elsie’s progress has only been possible thanks to the support of an incredible community — coaches, engineers, clubs, charities and sponsors — who have helped solve complex challenges around equipment, training and competition.
From custom prosthetic solutions to 3D-printed components and innovative bike adaptations, Elsie’s journey sits at the intersection of sport, engineering and inclusion.
